Sailboat Delivery Captain | California, Mexico & Offshore

I’m Captain Jeff Vegas, a USCG 100-Ton Master and professional sailboat delivery captain based in San Diego, California. I provide professional coastal and offshore sailboat deliveries aboard monohulls and cruising catamarans.

My experience includes a 5,209-nautical-mile, 66-day delivery from Florida to San Diego through the Caribbean and Panama Canal, as well as passages along the California and Mexico coasts.

Your Boat. Your Adventure.

Some owners simply need their sailboat delivered. Others want to be part of the adventure.

On an owner-aboard delivery, I serve as captain in command while you participate as crew. You can stand watches, navigate, steer, trim sails, and learn more about your boat and its systems, depending on your experience and the conditions.

As a USCG 100-Ton Master Captain and 2025 American Sailing Outstanding Instructor, I bring both offshore experience and award-winning instruction to every voyage. I enjoy helping owners gain confidence while experiencing an adventure they might otherwise hesitate to undertake.

It’s still your boat. It’s still your adventure. You just don’t have to figure everything out on your own.

Real-World Sailboat Delivery Experience

Florida to San Diego — 5,209 Nautical Miles, 66 Days

One of my longest deliveries took me from Fort Lauderdale, Florida, to San Diego, California, aboard a Leopard 42 sailing catamaran. Over 66 days and 5,209 nautical miles, we traveled through the Caribbean, transited the Panama Canal, and continued north along the Pacific coast.

The owners originally planned to join us for the adventure, but life got in the way. Instead, I captained the delivery with my crew, documenting the journey along the way. The 66-day passage provided extensive experience with the realities of long-distance sailboat delivery, from passage planning and weather decisions to the challenges that come with traveling thousands of miles aboard a cruising catamaran.

Long-distance deliveries require more than sailing ability. Weather decisions, navigation, vessel maintenance, crew management, and adapting to unexpected circumstances are all part of getting a boat safely to its destination.

Chiapas to Puerto Vallarta — An Owner-Aboard Adventure

Some of my favorite deliveries involve owners who want to experience the voyage themselves. On one passage along Mexico’s Pacific coast From the Southern Mexico Border, Chiapas, to Puerto Vallarta, the owners came aboard as crew, looking forward to an adventure on their own sailboat.

Unfortunately, the adventure didn’t go entirely as planned. The engine’s raw-water pump impeller broke apart, sending pieces into the heat exchanger, which turned what is sometimes a simple repair into several days of waiting in Acapulco, a city still recovering from a devastating hurricane the previous year, which made the situation even more challenging.

When the impeller broke apart, it sent fragments into the heat exchanger, and delayed our sailboat delivery for several days while we waited for repairs in Acapulco.

It wasn’t the trip the owners had envisioned, but that’s part of the reality of cruising. Mechanical failures happen, plans change, and sometimes the right decision is to turn around and solve the problem rather than press on. As captain, my responsibility is to make those decisions with the safety of the boat and crew in mind.

My job as captain isn’t to guarantee a trouble-free adventure. It’s to bring the experience and judgment needed to make decisions when things don’t go according to plan, while keeping the safety of the boat and crew the priority.

Coastal and Offshore Sailboat Delivery Services

Whether you’ve purchased a sailboat far from home, need to relocate your boat, or want an experienced captain aboard for a longer adventure, I’d be happy to discuss your plans.

Based in San Diego, California, my sailing and delivery experience includes:

  • California coastal passages and sailboat deliveries
  • Mexico’s Pacific coast, including the Baja Bash
  • U.S. East Coast, including Annapolis to Fort Lauderdale
  • Florida, the Bahamas, and the Caribbean
  • Central America and the Panama Canal
  • Long-distance offshore passages aboard monohulls and cruising catamarans

I’m not limited to these routes. Every delivery is different, and I’ll evaluate your boat, the proposed route, timing, weather considerations, and crew requirements before accepting an assignment.

Owners aren’t just welcome aboard. I encourage it! Many delivery captains prefer to make the passage without the owners aboard, focusing primarily on getting the boat to its destination. I take a different approach. If you’ve dreamed of making the passage yourself, I enjoy having you along as crew and sharing the adventure. We can plan stops, explore new places, and make the journey part of the experience—not just a way to get your boat from one port to another.

I’m still the captain, and safety, weather, and the condition of the boat always dictate our decisions. But when circumstances allow, there’s no reason we can’t enjoy the journey along the way.

What to Expect When You Hire Me

I’m a pretty laid-back captain. I don’t believe a long passage needs to feel like boot camp, and I certainly don’t need to remind everyone who’s in charge. But when it comes to the safety of the boat and crew, I take my responsibilities seriously.

Before departure, we’ll discuss your boat, its systems and condition, the route, weather considerations, crew requirements, and realistic expectations for the voyage. Offshore sailing requires flexibility, and sometimes the safest decision is to wait, change course, or make an unscheduled stop.

If you’re joining me aboard, you’re part of the crew, not just a passenger. I enjoy teaching, answering questions, and letting owners gain hands-on experience. You’ll have opportunities to steer, navigate, stand watches, and participate in running your boat, consistent with your abilities and the conditions.

Throughout the passage, my goal is straightforward: make sound decisions, communicate clearly, take good care of your boat, and make the experience as enjoyable as circumstances allow.

It’s your adventure. I’m there to captain it safely.
